The father of a teenager who was killed in a 2021 officer-involved shooting in downtown Austin is suing the city.The shooting happened in the early morning hour

The shooting happened in the early morning hours of Oct. 9, 2021, near the intersection of 6th Street and Sabine Street. Police were conducting a DWI investigation when they heard multiple gunshots coming from the north. They ran toward the sound and found a group of men firing weapons at another group.

The lawsuit also states that Vargas’ employment with the Austin Police Department was terminated in July of 2022. CBS Austin reached out to the department to confirm this information. Carothers’ father said the City “liable for the mental anguish and conscious pain and suffering that Carothers, Jr. sustained prior to his death,” and he is seeking compensation as a result.The City of Austin has not been served on this lawsuit yet, but we will follow the appropriate process and stand ready to defend the city.
