A B.C. father whose daughter was allegedly injured in an attack by bears at the Greater Vancouver Zoo has filed a lawsuit seeking damages.
In the lawsuit filed in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver, Richard Hanson states that on Aug. 5, 2019, his then two-year-old daughter, the plaintiff in the case, was at the Aldergrove zoo and put her arm through an unguarded chain-link fence located at the zoo’s black bear exhibit.

Please try again“The attack has caused and continues to cause the plaintiff serious personal injuries, losses and damages,” says the suit. The father, who is acting as a litigation guardian in the case, claims that the attack was caused by the negligence of the zoo. Injuries suffered by the girl include a fracture to her left distal ulna, the partial amputation of the left distal phalanx, loss of muscle tissue, lacerations, contusions and scarring, according to the suit.Article content The father is seeking general and special damages. He says that the zoo should have taken reasonable steps to ensure that the premises would not cause her injury. “At all material times, the fence and/or the bears constituted a hazard to invitees accessing the premises,” says the lawsuit. No response has yet been filed to the lawsuit, which contains allegations that have not been tested in court. In an email statement, Menita Prasad, the zoo’s director of animal care and deputy general manager, said that the zoo adheres to the safety standards put forward by Canada’s Accredited Zoos and Aquariums organization to ensure the safety and wellbeing of their patrons and animals. “Multiple barriers are purposefully put in place to maintain a safe distance between patrons and our animals. We can confirm the incident occurred in an area that is not authorized for public access.”Article content On its website, the zoo says it is dedicated to education and conservation and is home to many rescued, donated and orphaned animals. It says it has 140 species of animals on 120 acres.
