Rich Nichols, his 9-year-old daughter and her friend were on their way down the mountain, which is in the city of Lakeshore, on Friday when they eventually got stuck in snow on state Route 168, resulting from the fierce snowstorms that hit California last week.he thought he’d be able to make it through the storm.
"It's a 4x4 Honda Ridgeline truck and I had chains and I've taken it to Mammoth and Salt Lake City, Brian Head, Utah, and never had any issues anywhere but it was just, it was a crazy storm," Nichols said. In the past seven days, China Peak has received up to 12 feet of snow in some areas, the resort reportedAt the point where Nichols got stuck, he was without cell service. He was able, however, to eventually email his wife for help.
Joanna Nichols, Rich’s wife, told Fox 26 that she received an email from him saying “Help stuck on the 168.” She then called California Highway Patrol from where she was in Southern California, and through CHP officials, she was able to prompt her husband’s rescue. He had advised that he was somewhere between Shaver Lake and China Peak.
