It wasn't immediately clear whether Ordonez had a custody agreement with Leylani's mother, but police believe Leylani lived with her mother. Ordonez's alleged abduction of Leylani soon triggered an Amber Alert. Ordonez and the man who was stabbed knew each other in some capacity but Suni Jugueta, a Rosenberg Police Department spokeswoman, said she was not able to provide more detailed information about their relationship.
Police said Ordonez finally stopped the truck and exited it, holding Leylani Ordonez, who was visibly bloody in his arms, according to Jugueta. Standing outside the truck in front of officers, he proceeded to stab himself, police said.
