The accident occurred just before 9:30 a.m. near the Highway 12 overpass on Memorial Avenue, shortly after a snow squall warning was issued for the city and surrounding areas. OPP Acting Sgt. Jake Daynes reported that whiteout conditions significantly contributed to the accident, making visibility extremely poor.
Northbound lanes of Highway 11 are closed from Coldwater Road to Highway 400, while southbound lanes are closed from County Road 169 to Line 15 in Oro-Medonte. These closures are expected to remain in effect for an extended period. Emergency crews are still at the scene, working diligently to clear the wreckage and provide aid to those affected. The City of Orillia has deployed transit vehicles to act as warming centers for individuals caught in the accident, ensuring their safety and well-being.Daynes urged the public to avoid traveling on Highway 11 unless absolutely necessary. He advised motorists involved in any collisions to remain in their vehicles for safety reasons, as visibility remains poor and the risk of further accidents is high. Witnesses reported witnessing several collisions, including a pickup truck striking a gravel truck and a chain-reaction crash involving a stopped vehicle.
