Tiferet Lapidot's family is hoping Canada can step in and help find out what happened to the 23 year old
TEL AVIV — It’s Saturday night, but instead of baking Tiferet Lapidot a cake for her going-away birthday party, her friends were baking challah bread, weaving it with prayers — as a Jewish act of resistance and faith. Hundreds of women from all over Israel blessed the dough, sending videos online for the return of their friend, a hostage taken to the Gaza Strip by members of Hamas.
“Tiferet said she had to go because the battery was running out and her mom just wanted her to stay on the phone. The call lasted a couple of minutes,” Goren recalls. Goren describes Tiferet as tall and charismatic, often entering a room with a wide smile. “A beautiful girl with a beautiful heart. I was at her birth. She’s like my daughter,” she says.
“She had a birthday yesterday and now she is in the hands of Hamas,” says her aunt. “We know she is one of hundreds but we want her to hear from us, for her to know that someone will check on her to see that she is okay. We are not sleeping and can’t imagine what she is going through, every day and,” she pauses, “especially every night that she is there.”The disturbing videos taken by Hamas now circulating the internet are a parent’s worst nightmare.
A family connection tried to reach the top: “I raised it directly with Trudeau this morning,” said the source wishing to stay anonymous. “The problem is she is not a Canadian national. Without citizenship she does not qualify for those considerations.”
