The lawsuit alleges youth protection received four reports of negligence concerning the young girl's mother, including excessive alcohol and drug use, but the situation was systematically ignored.
On March 6, 2023, she pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. She had initially been charged with second-degree murder. On Monday, the young girl's father, half-sister and grandmother announced they were suing the youth protection section of the CIUSSS du Centre-Sud-de-l'Île-de-Montréal, alleging Maélie's file was systematically closed "despite the very alarming circumstances and the recurrence of events."
"When a 15-year-old calls to report her own mother … I think that's a pretty big cry from the heart to be heard and listened to, and to get me and my sister out, but my sister first," Filiatrault said tearfully. "I will never be able to forgive them for their carelessness regarding the situation of my sister and me," she said.
