Two elderly women with dementia were evicted from their private pay seniors care home just days after their families filed complaints with Island Health over concerns regarding their mothers' care.
Joan Hooper lived a full life until dementia robbed her of independent living., at a cost of $8,000 a month.
Marta Vaesen also lived at Island View Place Care for seven years, with excellent care, according to her family. This was critical because she required a wheelchair and lived with profound dementia.“It wasn’t until early 2023 that the nurse that had great relationship communication-wise left. A lot of staff was leaving. They had a new nurse. And it was really from that point on the communication fell apart,” Lynn Zeleschuk, Vaesen’s step-daughter, said.
During its investigation, Island Health determined the women were subjected to eviction without a valid reason or action by the licensee to mitigate the issues other than offering a mediator ‘after’ the termination notice was provided. They wrote to the premier, health minister, medical health officer, and many others., Dan Levitt, said there is little protection for vulnerable seniors living in a private pay facility.
Levitt said the agreement between residents and the licensee is similar to one between landlord and tenant.
