Fallout in gang rape allegations continues with release of Bills punter Araiza, SDSU's Leonard
No one has been arrested, and no criminal charges have been filed.
Araiza became the first football player in SDSU’s history to win a major national award when he earned the 2021 Ray Guy Award as the nation’s top punter. That, after setting an NCAA record last season with a 51.19-yard punting average. His accomplishments earned him the nickname “Punt God.” Executives from two different teams told The Associated Press they became aware of Araiza’s involvement in an incident during the draft process, but neither person knew the extent of the allegations. Executives from three other teams said they had no knowledge of the allegations against Araiza before the draft and only learned of the incident Thursday. All the people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.
Araiza’s agent, Joe Linta, did not immediately return a request for comment. On Friday, Linta released this statement from Araiza: “The facts of the incident are not what they are portrayed in the lawsuit or in the press. I look forward to quickly setting the record straight.”
