Carol Hughes, MP for Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing, criticized the Federal government's Fall Economic Statement for doing little to alleviate the financial concerns of Canadians who are struggling with a cost-of-living crisis and growing inequality. While Hughes acknowledged some positive measures, such as tax filing improvements and support for healthcare workers, she argued that the statement primarily benefits corporate interests through tax cuts and subsidies.

When the Federal government released their Fall Economic Statement yesterday, it didn't do much to alleviate the financial concerns of Canadians.Carol Hughes says the statement shows the "government is on the wrong track" when it comes to affordability, housing and health care.On Monday, the Federal government released their Fall Economic Statement at a time when Canadians are still struggling with growing inequality and a cost-of-living crisis.

“This statement clearly shows the government is on the wrong track on affordability, housing, and health care,” said Carol Hughes, MP for Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing. “There are a few measures that will help, such as expanding automatic tax filing, exempting taxes on the Canada Disability Benefit, and improving credential recognition for healthcare workers.

Following an astonishing day in Parliament that saw the Finance Minister / Deputy Prime Minister resign from Cabinet, the Fall Economic Statement was tabled late by the Government House Leader without statement or explanation. “New Democrats believe it’s time that ordinary Canadians are made the priority,” said Hughes. “We can no longer afford corporate handouts and oil company subsidies at a time when people continue to have trouble making ends meet, and Conservative cuts would only make things harder.”
