For its first full-scale event since the pandemic began, more than 130,000 people are expected to pour into the Metro Toronto Convention Centre from Aug. 24 through 28.Currently, horror, science fiction and superheroes dominate pop culture. But only a couple of decades ago, they were on the fringes of the entertainment industry.
It wasn’t until years after the first show that Jeri Ryan of “Star Trek: Voyager” became the first celebrity to appear, transforming the event into the ultimate geek meet-and-greet. “It’s really an electric moment when you’re in that autograph hall and you’re seeing that connection,” says Moyes. “You see walking away with that autograph or that photo op. We’re really creating once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.
“You feel like you just walked onto a movie set when you’re around them,” Moyes says of the fans who dress in elaborate getups to celebrate their favourite characters. “It’s come such a long way going to the thrift store and pulling a few things together.” Toronto-based Godin will be an official guest at this weekend’s expo, where attendees will find her dressed as Captain Hook, the titular creature from “Beauty and the Beast”“I’ve always been over the top on Halloween since I was a child,” says the 28-year-old artist and singer. “It’s the making of the costume that’s my favourite part. Even if I just wore it for me and no one ever saw it, I would still cosplay just for the love of the art.
