NORTH SYDNEY, N.S. — As work continues to rebuild the Highway 125 bridge that overpasses Trans-Canada Highway 105, the temporary roundabout setup that’s in place remains a navigating annoyance for many local users.Much of the discontent specifically comes from drivers who regularly use the roundabout — but who also have experienced close calls from other fast-driving motorists almost on a daily basis.

Sydney resident Mary Camus:"It is a p--s-off that others don’t know the rules of the road." CONTRIBUTEDD - IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POSTSydney resident Mary Camus said a speeding motorist ignoring right-of-way rules through the roundabout almost collided with her vehicle. “Sadly, it’s a daily occurrence where I see people failing to yield coming from Bras d’Or,” said Coombs. “I will be the one trying to exit the roundabout — therefore having the right of way — and I will be in fact having to be the one to yield.

“I went on it for the first time this year and someone almost crashed into me,” Coombs said. “They failed to yield! Ever since then, as a precaution, I yield just in case.” A 2022 aerial view of Trans-Canada Highway 105 heading toward the Marine Atlantic ferry to Newfoundland, with pylons set up to help with traffic flow through a temporary roundabout setup. Motorists cannot go under the bridge along the 105 nor go across the bridge along Highway 125, as repairs to the structure are currently taking place. Work is now slated to be completed this fall.

“I really wish people would take more care when driving in this area. I have my kids in the vehicle most times when I drive. We would like to arrive at our destination in one piece.”
