WASHINGTON - The largest group of Democratic presidential candidates in the modern U.S. political era has gotten a little bit smaller, while the Republican field slowly grows.
On Wednesday, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand from New York became the sixth Democratic candidate to drop out of the race since July. On Sunday, former congressman Joe Walsh became the second Republican challenger to Trump’s renomination. The diverse group of Democrats vying to challenge Trump, who remains the likely Republican nominee, in November 2020 includes six U.S. senators. A record five women are running, as well as black, Hispanic and openly gay candidates who would make history if one of them becomes the party’s nominee.
