Some people said the U.S. government created hurricanes Milton and Helene for political reasons. Scientists say the conspiracy is bogus.

This story contains information about people dying in hurricanes. Consider reading it with a trusted adult. It’s common to have an emotional reaction to the news. Both of them touched down in Florida, and other states. One is that the Democratic-led U.S. government created the storms to target Republican voters. Two weeks ago, Hurricane Helene landed in Florida, killing hundreds of people and devastating half a dozen U.S. states. On Oct. 9, Hurricane Milton also hit Florida.

This is often done by spraying particles of salts into clouds using flares carried by airplanes or projectiles like rockets. But the science behind cloud seeding is mixed, and attempts to control hurricanes using science have failed time and time again. The results were inconclusive and raised ethical concerns about potentially endangering more people.

Hurricane Milton caused huge amounts of damage, including destroying the domed roof of Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, giving a clear view inside the baseball stadium where the MLB's Tampa Bay Rays play. Weather history shows the hurricanes are hitting many of the same areas they have for centuries, according to the Associated Press. One of the reasons the conspiracy has gained ground has to do with the upcoming U.S. election, which is less than a month away.

“It’s creating distrust in the federal government, but also the state government, and we have so many first responders that have been working to go out and help these communities,” she said Tuesday.
