Pharmacists could soon be keeping their narcotics supply in time-delay safes as the industry tries to stem the increasing tide of armed robberies in the GTA and across the province.

— the regulatory body for the profession — voted to begin the process of requiring all community pharmacies to have a time-delayed safe. An implementation plan will be presented to the board in March for final approval and the safes would be required within a yet-to-be-specified amount of time after that meeting.

The hope is that the presence of the time-delayed feature would deter robberies altogether, as seems to be the case in other jurisdictions where they are required. College staff said some existing safes can be modified with a mechanism that puts them on a time delay. Otherwises new safes will have to be purchased.

James Morrison, who is also the director of pharmacy excellence at Whole Health Pharmacy Partners, which operates in the GTA and beyond, said the network had four robberies last week alone. Data provided to the college shows more than 50 per cent of robberies this year in Toronto involved a weapon and that a handgun was used in a third of all robberies.
