Ezekiel Elliott’s free agency can’t be going as planned. A former coach has some advice.
Skip Peete, who was the Cowboys’ running backs coach for three seasons and now has the same job with the Buccaneers, said on Wednesday that Elliott has to accept his new reality.Peete told reporters after Bucs practice“Who’s gonna tell him that? I think that’s part of the reason he’s sitting out there. But if you’re going to play and be the second, third guy that’s kind of what the price is. That’s something that person has to make a decision if that’s what he wants to do.
Elliott’s role was reduced in Dallas in recent seasons with the emergence of Tony Pollard, who the Cowboys opted to keep by putting the franchise tag on him.Elliott, who turns 28 in July, has 1,881 carries in his career, and the value of veteran running backs has decreased significantly in recent seasons as teams often rely on selecting backs late in the draft to use in backup roles.
“I think Zeke is still a good, quality running back in my opinion… Your numbers are naturally going to go down,” Peete said. “He still scored 12 touchdowns, he still caught the ball well, still had numerous third-and-1 and short yardage plays where he helped us win games, still a physical load. “The thing I admire him for is accepting that role. It was hard the first couple of weeks to have a guy going from being a featured back to tell him hey, ‘From this time on, you are going to split time.'”Skip Peete during Cowboys training camp in 2021.Despite Dallas drafting Kansas State running back Deuce Vaughn in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, the team kept the door slightly open for an Elliott reunion.
