Beach safety officials said the surf really kicked up overnight with consistent four-to-six-foot surf and a strong-running westerly current. The National Weather Service in Mobile predicted the surf to get even larger by the end of the day.
) - Beach safety officials in Baldwin County posted double red flags Monday, March 25, 2024 making it illegal to enter the gulf waters in Gulf Shores. Winds howled out of the southeast, double red flags dancing in the wind, warning folks to stay out of the water.
Despite the double red flags flying over Gulf Place, some folks like Jason Harmon from Indiana were so excited to get to the beach, he didn’t notice the warnings and got a friendly reminder from the beach patrol. He said they gave him a warning of the dangers. Many folks traveled long distances for spring break and were determined to make the most of the day anyway. Some played football. Others went shell hunting or just sightseeing.
“This is day one for us,” said Colin Russo, on spring break from the University of Wisconsin. “All of a sudden, double red, no swimming, the rip current will take ya. It’s just been a big surprise to us. Sand in your face. Sand gusts all over the place.”
