The Play features over 40 local youth from ages 8 to 16

The youth-focused theatre company is celebrating over 25 years of musical theatre programming by bringing Newsies Jr. to residents of Thunder Bay.

The play is set in New York in 1899 and surrounds the real-life newsboys’ strike of 1899, where the New York newsies went up against two newspaper publishers, Joseph Pulitzer of The World and William Randolph Hearst of The Journal, to fight for fair wages.“Our youth need a positive outlet and theatre is definitely a positive outlet for them,” said Angela Valela, co-director.

“This is a place where they can be themselves and the stage is where a lot of them really, really thrive and shine. Everybody deserves their audience and they deserve to be seen and heard.” The play features over 40 local youth from ages 8 to 16, including Samuel Giardino who plays the leader of the newsies, Jack Kelly.“You just get to hang out with a bunch of people, you get to dance, you get to sing, you get to act,” he said.Newsies Jr. is being performed on March 1 and 2 at the Trinity Hall Theatre at 30 Algoma St.
