A threat of an explosive device led to the evacuation of a large area around the New Westminster courthouse, including Douglas College, on Tuesday morning. Police closed roads and launched a search, but found nothing suspicious.

Police in New Westminster , B.C., confirmed that a threat of an explosive device prompted the evacuation of a large area around the courthouse, including nearby Douglas College . Officers were notified of the threat on Tuesday morning and asked people to leave out of an abundance of caution. Videos circulating on social media showed hundreds of people near the college leaving the area. At the time, the reason for the evacuation was not publicly disclosed.

Police stated in a news release that portions of the surrounding roads were closed for several hours, but nothing suspicious was found. Douglas College also canceled all in-person classes, activities, and events during the search. The area reopened approximately three hours after the evacuation announcement, but police say their investigation is ongoing and they are urging anyone with information to come forward
