Health Canada has issued guidance to families with babies who have food allergies and serious medical conditions and are being impacted by the global shortage of baby formula.
Canada has a shortage of baby formula for children who have severe food allergies and medical conditions, Health Canada says.
Abbott Laboratories in the United States, one of the largest manufacturers of infant formula brands like Similac and Alimentum, halted production at its Michigan plant following atriggered by four babies who suffered bacterial infections and had to be hospitalized after consuming the formula. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration also said it was investigating Similac’s possible connection in at least one infant death.
The shortage of extensively hydrolyzed formulations has put pressure on an already-limited supply of amino-acid based formulas, says Health Canada.
