Expanded combine gives Canadian Football League teams deeper look at prospects Via sportsdanbarnes
“How they are in the lobby, how they are in the elevator, how they interact with CFL staff and whether there are any flags from that,” said O’Day.
No team wants to get fooled in the interview room or on the combine floor. To that end, this event will be unlike any the CFL has staged previously, and its sheer length ought to open a wider window into the souls of the national and global players on site.
“The thing was we were bringing from Japan, from Europe, NCAA players in the States, from all over Canada. To give them the opportunity to truly showcase what they can do, we felt it was too quick to go in and out, do the drills and then they’re gone,” CFL associate VP of football ops Ryan Janzen told CFL.ca reporter Chris O’Leary recently. “Let’s keep these guys a little longer, put them through some more drills, see how they do and give the scouts more time to evaluate.
“The best thing about the combine is the competition level that you get to see in person,” said Winnipeg Blue Bombers GM Kyle Walters. “You get to see them competing against the best. I’m excited about this year where you get to spend more time with them … You get an extended period to evaluate them. This is a big piece of the puzzle, the testing that they’ll go through and then seeing how they compete. We always talk about pulling out the passion from players.
