The Regional District of Nanaimo is celebrating the addition of a 78-acre parcel of land to the 707 Community Park on Gabriola Island.
“Undisturbed ecosystems on Gabriola Island are disappearing and becoming fragmented, with only 12 per cent of the island currently protected,” said the regional district in a release Thursday. Funding for the land purchase came through short-term borrowing of $750,000 by the RDN’s Electoral Area B Community Parks and Halls Service, as well as a $100,000 contribution from the Gabriola Lands & Trails Trust.
The new parcel includes second-growth forest, as well as several seasonal streams that “help maintain good water quality in water courses further downstream,” according to the RDN.
