Hundreds of residents from Calgary and southern Alberta are expected to make the trip north
Pope Francis will be visiting Canada starting on July 24 until July 29 while focusing on reconciliation with Canada’s First Nations communities. He will start the trip in Edmonton before meeting with a delegation of Indigenous, First Nation, Inuit and Metis people in Maskwacis. He will then return to Edmonton for Mass at Commonwealth Stadium on Tuesday before heading to Lac Ste. Anne, his final stop in Alberta.
“I think is a really historic moment. There is excitement and there’s hope and there’s also I think, there’s a heaviness right because most of the people in our contingent are Indigenous,” said Scott. “There’s a heaviness but there’s also … we’re in this together, right, we’re walking and we’re doing this together in a good way.”Article content
Siksika Nation posted a statement on its website saying it hopes the visit is a learning and healing opportunity for those involved. “We had rented a couple of buses to go up to Edmonton, we have paid for the pastors and all, but it took us so long to find out whether we were going to get the tickets or not enter into the stadium and so in that case we had to cancel the buses,” said Tignanelli.
“This visit is historic,” said Tignanelli. “The last pope that was here was in 1984, Pope John Paul II, so it’s always a historic event. Of course, it is exciting for all of us in the Catholic community, normally if you want to see the Pope, you have to go to Rome.”
