ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — A familiar tune filled the sanctuary at St. Thomas’ Anglican Church on Friday during Bob Cole's funeral.

Cole and those notes were married in a way. For close to 50 years, the boy from Topsail called the games that accompanied that song. Inside the church, about 100 family, friends and colleagues came together to show their respects to the legendary broadcaster. “I think you look at what Bob did every night on a Saturday, there was a canvas,” said Healy. “Some of us painted the barn. That would be me. Then there was Robert, and he painted a Picasso. Healy wasn’t the only one of Cole’s colleagues to attend the funeral. He was joined by John Shannon, Cassie Campbell, Greg Millen, Elliotte Friedman, Ron MacLean and others.

Sportscaster Ron MacLean, co-host on “Hockey Night in Canada” and a longtime friend of Bob Cole, talks to reporters Friday outside St. Thomas’ Church after Cole’s funeral. MacLean gave the eulogy at the funeral. JOE GIBBONS • THE TELEGRAMCole was the voice of hockey for a generation of hockey fans, first on the radio before moving to the television broadcast.
