The long-time Nationals star and nation-wide phenom has been dealing with chronic injuries for years.
FILE - Washington Nationals starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg throws during the first inning of a baseball game against the Miami Marlins, on June 9, 2022, in Miami. Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo says Strasburg’s status for 2023 is up in the air after a series of injuries limited the pitcher to one start this season. One of the biggest prospect phenoms of the last 20 years is ready to hang up his cleats.
Strasburg has dealt with numerous injuries throughout his career, but the final blow appears to be a bout with thoracic outlet syndrome in 2021 that lead to a surgical procedure which removed a rib and two neck muscles. He will finish his career with a 113-62 record with a 3.23 ERA and 1723 strikeouts, pitching his entire career for the Nationals.
He quickly worked his way up the minor leagues, including a five-start stint with the Harrisburg Senators in 2010, before making his MLB debut in electric fashion against the Pittsburgh Pirates, striking out 14 in seven innings.
