Girlfriend of late ex-Texans QB Ryan Mallett: 'I'm so sorry I couldn't save you'
, Mallett went underwater and was not breathing when he was pulled to shore.
Mallett played seven years in the NFL. He was drafted by the New England Patriots in 2011 before being traded to the Texans three years later. He started six games for Houston from 2014-15 before being released during the 2015 season. Mallett lost a quarterback competition to Brian Hoyer in the 2015 preseason before the latter was benched by Texans coach Bill O’Brien in the fourth quarter of the season opener, handing the job to Mallett for the next four games. Mallett’s time with the Texans ended three weeks later afterMallett was then picked up by the Baltimore Ravens, where he spent the final two-plus seasons of his career.
At the time of his death, Mallett was coming off his first year as the head football coach at White Hall High School in Pine Bluff, Ark. After his death, the school district called him “a beloved coach and educator” in a statement.
