Northumberland County Judge Charles H. Saylor ruled Wednesday Joseph Leschinskie could not hold public office because of convictions of 'infamous' crimes.

Joseph J. Leschinskie Jr. made the decision Friday a day after he asked the remaining four council members to appoint him to fill the vacancy caused by his ouster.“They said I would never win a political race because of my past; I won. After I won they said I can’t be sworn in; I was, and I pulled off the swearing in of a lifetime.

“During those six years, I have been arrested on bogus charges for fighting for the right thing, for standing up for what is right, thousands of dollars in legal fees, jail, all the pain I’ve caused the people around me. On Wednesday, Northumberland County Judge Charles H. Saylor ruled Leschinskie’s two 2009 felony drug convictions were “infamous” crimes as defined by the state constitution.Immediately after the decision, Leschinskie vowed to keep fighting and held out the possibility of an appeal if he could raise the money for an attorney.

His lawyer for Wednesday’s hearing, Frank Kepner, cited a 2012 case in which a judge ruled York Councilman Michael Helfrich could remain office despite two felony convictions for possession with intent to deliver LSD. Leschinskie pointed out in his testimony that his criminal record was well known prior to last November’s election and he still won.
