People gathered on Nov. 1 for a vigil and protest at Blanco Road and West Avenue — near where 17-year-old Erik Cantu was shot by James Brennand, who was a San Antonio police officer at the time of the shooting and who faces criminal charges for his actions.Brennand called for backup but did not wait for other officers to arrive before he opened the driver-side door and demanded that the teenager exit the car.
Brennand was a probationary officer who had been with the San Antonio Police Department for seven months prior to the shooting. Days after the shooting, Police Chief William McManus announced that Brennand had been fired and that his department had opened a criminal investigation into the shooting.
