Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer found guilty of murdering George Floyd, appealed his conviction on Thursday, three months after he was sentenced to 22 years in prison in one of the most high profile cases of police brutality against Black Americans which sparked worldwide protests.... April 20, 2021, as the former Minneapolis police officer was convicted on all three charges in the death of George Floyd in May 2020.Chauvin’s appeal alleges that the trial judge abused his discretion by denying his request to postpone or move the trial from Minneapolis due to the publicity around the case.
Chauvin has asked the Minnesota Supreme Court to also review an earlier decision to deny him a public defender. The former cop’s appeal was filed just before the expiry of a 90-day deadline given to him after his sentencing on June 23.
