Cody McEachern • The GuardianCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Poor weather has bought the few remaining residents at Charlottetown's tent encampment a little more time as the province prepares to clean up the site.
In an email to SaltWire Network, a spokesperson for the province’s Department of Social Development and Housing said the cleanup of the grounds was planned to happen on Jan. 23. However recent weather delayed those plans to Jan. 24 or Jan. 25, depending on the weather and when snow clearing could be completed at the event grounds.UPDATE: Workers clearing Charlottetown tent encampment in P.E.I.
The fire turned out to be confined to a metal barrel, which contained wiring that had been set on fire. While the fire didn’t spread and no one was hurt, the fire spurred an inspection of the site, which resulted in the removal of several propane tanks and makeshift heaters. “By working collaboratively with community partners and city officials, the department of Social Development and Housing is supporting individuals who previously accessed the temporary encampment to move personal belongings from the site,” said the spokesperson.
