The Evergreen Park Urban Barn hosts regular classes for AERO, the special education cooperative for students ages 14-22, and seniors with special needs from the Southwest Special Recreation Association.

Mary Kay Nielsen, Evergreen Park Urban Barn manager, with one of the chickens. She brought them with her from her job as an elementary school librarian. Nielsen, a former language arts teacher and elementary school librarian, brought the chickens with her from her previous job. But she’s also developed a special relationship with the animals, including the mini-horse, Ariel, who is 19.
Seniors with special needs from the Southwest Special Recreation Association in Alsip and one in Mount Greenwood come to learn and enjoy. Ally Winn volunteers for an hour weekly at the barn. She used to come as a student in AERO Special Education Cooperative but aged out of that program.
