In the original “Karate Kid” film series in the 1980s, the lines between good and evil are as clear as the borders of a martial arts mat. Daniel LaRusso is the good-natured underdog, training under the zen style of his sensei, Mr. Miyagi. His opponent, Johnny Lawrence , follows the militant ways of Cobra Kai: strike first, strike hard, no mercy.
The show pays homage to the ’80s movie tropes that birthed it, with teenage melodrama contrasted by surprisingly brutal kid-on-kid violence. It’s not trying to be a prestige television show, just a nostalgic comfort watch with very well-choreographed fight scenes. The first few seasons went down easy, but as the grudges between the rivaling factions have snowballed in season four, a strange trend has developed: in the Karate Kid Cinematic Universe, there’s no such thing as a good person .
Nowhere else on television are you more likely to see a child punch another kid in the face for zero reason at all. The bullying is brutal, and every time a character offers some type of peace treaty, it’s met with a roundhouse kick to the nuts. Even the adults are incapable of acting like grown-ups, their zealous allegiance to their dojos reminiscent of blind political polarization.
