The European Union has delayed the introduction of a visa-like program, called ETIAS, for the third time. The new travel requirements, now slated for 2024, would impact Canadians travelling to some European countries. CTVNews.ca takes a look at everything you need to know.
ETIAS will require an application that will be needed before entering certain countries within the EU. It is linked to a person's passport and valid for up to three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.Travellers will need the visa to gain entry to 27 European countries, known as the Schengen area, and the addition of three other nations.There are 27 countries that make up the Schengen area, with the exception of Bulgaria, Cyprus and Romania, which will still use ETIAS.
These nations allow travellers to move freely without passing by internal borders. The Schengen area first launched in 1985 with five countries. Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.the European Council's website explains.Before the ETIAS requirements take effect in 2024, Canadians are able to enter the Schengen area at any of the Schengen area country's borders and travel freely.
