- BRUSSELS, SEP 26 - European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday reiterated her position that the whole EU must come up with solutions to the problems created by the arrival of migrants.
Italy is under particular pressure following a surge in the number of migrant boats arriving at the island of Lampedusa from North Africa. The interior ministry said Monday that 133,005 people have arrived in Italy on migrant boats so far this year, almost double the 69,806 that landed in the equivalent period last year.
"Migration is a phenomenon that regards the whole EU and it requires European solutions," von der Leyen said at a press conference with Czech Premier Petr Fiala. "We want to support member States to manage migration in an effective, humane way," added von der Leyen, who recently visited Lampedusa with Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni.
