There are growing indications that the EU and UK could, later today, set out an agreed framework on resolving the most contentious issues around the Northern Ireland Protocol
The British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly and Maroš Šefčovič, the EU's chief negotiator, are expected to make a joint statement following a video-conference.
EU and UK officials have been working intensely over the weekend on a draft statement or declaration on the Protocol. Diplomats have stressed that there is still an enormous amount of technical work to be done before an overall agreement is reached. There are indications that today’s statement could spell out how far both sides have come in reaching agreement on issues like customs formalities and agrifood checks on goods moving from Britain to Northern Ireland.
