Officials in Nanaimo are planning a celebration for Olympians and Paralympians, including hammer throw champ Ethan Katzberg.

Starting at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26, the city will honour Paris 2024 Olympic gold medalist Katzberg, 22, who came out swinging and helped make Canadian history at the recent Games, throwing 84.12 metres in the final.

He became Canada’s first Olympic gold medallist in any throwing event in 120 years and the youngest-ever Olympic champion in the men’s hammer throw, adding to a list of previous accomplishments. He went on to be Team Canada’sThe city says other past and present athletes who competed in Olympic and Paralympic Games will also be recognized at the event, which will be held at the Rotary Bowl at 355 Wakesiah Ave., behind Nanaimo District Secondary School.“It’s OK if you can’t make it.

Following Katzberg’s win, the track club’s head coach, Wanda Urbanowicz, told CHEK News she got emotional and started crying happy tears.
