Hammer thrower Ethan Katzberg has been awarded The Canadian Press male athlete of the year for 2024, marking Canada's first Olympic champion in the event since 1912. Katzberg earned the honor with his outstanding performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, securing a gold medal with a throw of 84.12 meters. This historic victory propelled him to beat out fellow nominees Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Connor McDavid in a close vote.
VANCOUVER — A history-making medal helped sway voters choosing who would win The Canadian Press male athlete of the award in 2024.
“That’s incredible," Katzberg said of the feat."Those are two highly achieving athletes who have done incredibly well in their respective sports. That's really cool.”Other previous male winners include hockey players Sidney Crosby and Carey Price , basketball player Steve Nash , and fellow track and field athletes Donovan Bailey , Andre De Grasse and Damian Warner .
Katzberg's success — combined with that of fellow Canadian Camryn Rogers, who won Olympic gold in the women's hammer throw — sparked a growing interest in the sport across the country. The duo were easy to spot, in part because of the thrower's six-foot-seven frame, his distinctive moustache and his shoulder-length hair.
“It’s interesting because you work toward something and it's kind of a bit of a pressure cooker of energy," Katzberg said."You build so long towards this one moment, and then you have that moment, and then it's like, ‘OK, this is all I've been thinking about for so long. Now, what do I do afterwards?’
