Essential Quality won the Belmont Stakes, giving trainer Brad Cox his first victory in a Triple Crown race
ELMONT, N.Y.—Essential Quality beat Hot Rod Charlie in a thrilling stretch duel to win Saturday’s Belmont Stakes by 1 ¼ lengths, giving trainer Brad Cox his first victory in a Triple Crown race. Preakness winner Rombauer finished third.
“That was a long way around there, a mile and a half,” Cox said. “But that was exciting. Luis did a fantastic job of getting him into position and [the horse] showed his stamina late.” The Belmont was the culmination of a Triple Crown that has been overshadowed by questions about the legitimacy of Medina Spirit’s Derby victory and Baffert’s spate of testing violations. The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission has yet to complete its investigation.
Essential Quality, last year’s 2-year-old champion, had been the betting favorite in the Kentucky Derby. At Churchill Downs, Essential Quality had a bad start and was bumped a few steps out of the starting gate, resulting in a wide trip around the track in which the horse covered 68 more feet than Medina Spirit.
