Yrgalem Weldu Belay and her two daughters, Helen Solomon Kiflesus and Furtuna Solomon Kiflesus. - ContributedYrgalem Weldu Belay and her two daughters, Helen Solomon Kiflesus and Furtuna Solomon Kiflesus, had their application to come to Canada finalized in November 2020.“That’s really escalated this past week,” said Dan Campbell, from the Halifax Eritrean Refugee Sponsorship group, on Monday.
Ross informed Campbell, along with his siblings and friends, about Belay’s case. In October 2020, they managed to raise enough money to submit the sponsorship application. It has been over two years since that application was finalized. Since then, Belay and her daughters have been staying in Khartoum with other refugee families.
“They’ve said that there’s a real serious risk of these desperate travellers being exploited, especially when they’re trying to cross an international border.”“The Canadian embassy will resume operations in Khartoum as soon as the situation in Sudan allows us to guarantee proper service and the safety and security for our staff,” said Global Affairs Canada in a statement.Yrgalem Weldu Belay poses for a photograph.
“The reason why I interfere in the future is because, when I came here, I got a lot of help from Nova Scotia, and especially from people living in Halifax,” said Fecadu.Campbell said that his group received a note in February saying they should “expect news of the refugee family’s arrival imminently.”“Because of the housing situation in Halifax, we opted to sign a lease for an apartment for them,” said Campbell.
