The Chicago City Council recently approved EPIC Academy College Prep’s plans for a $22 million addition and renovation, pegged as a “community impact institution,” at 8231 S. South Shore Drive in the South Chicago neighborhood.

EPIC Academy College Prep in South Chicago has plans to transform the former St. Michael's school building at 8231 S. South Shore Drive into a $22 million state-of-the-art school and community asset expected to be completed by the 2025-2026 school year.

The Houston Avenue building has only one science lab, which is shared between all grades from ninth through 12th. The new 56,000-square-foot addition to the St. Michael building is slated to have four labs.“We work really hard at scheduling to make sure every student has an opportunity to have science lab time,” Khan said.

Sixty percent of EPIC students come from the 60617 ZIP code in South Chicago. According to the 2021-22Schools officials tout their 85% graduation rate and their nearly 90% college acceptance rate. “When 18,000 jobs go away, it really has an impact on an area and I arguably say that the South Side struggled to bounce back since then,” Sandoval said. “But there’s a lot of resiliency in the neighborhood, and it shows up as the children that go to school there. So on top of being an educational institution, its most redeeming quality for the community is going to be as an anchor point — a place that brings people together. And all communities need that.

“The design of the building incorporates the community and provides an even greater connection between school and community,” Mitchell said Thursday. “This new development may serve as a generator of new partnerships and an avenue to greater accessibility. Historically, our community has been under-resourced and underserved. Our children and community deserves this to increase positive student outcomes.
