Golf. It seems like a sport that can safely be played during a global pandemic. Arguably, the safest. While the social aspect is important, at its core, golf is an outdoor, solitary pursuit. One person. One ball . Eighteen holes. But during COVID-19, nothing is simple. Richard and Donnovan explore the opening of golf courses in Canada generally and how one club in the Greater Toronto Area — home to more than six-million people — is tackling health-and-safety restrictions.
Laurence Applebaum is the CEO of Golf Canada, the governing body for golf in the country. He discusses the guidance and support the organization has offered its more than 1,400 member clubs, whether this is an opportunity to flip flagging participation numbers, the economics of the sport at the leisure, amateur and professional levels, and more.
John Young is the COO of the Copper Creek Golf Group, which operates four clubs in Canada’s most populous province, and GM of the Copper Creek Golf Club, the CCGG’s flagship course. Donnovan visits Copper Creek to talk to Young about safety protocols, how the pandemic has impacted business and staffing, what he’s learned about the Canadian golf industry during the past few months and more.
