I love being able to call Pennsylvania my home, but the more I learn about our poor air quality, the more I worry that doing so has put my health at risk.
Growing up outside Harrisburg, many of my friends and classmates struggled with asthma. It never occurred to me that air pollution could be putting their health at risk since dirty air seemed like a big city problem. Sadly, millions of Pennsylvanians are regularly exposed to unsafe levels of soot pollution. These emissions, also known as fine particulates, can travel deep into the body where they contribute to health problems like breathing problems, heart attacks, stroke, cancer, and premature death. Soot pollution is especially harmful for those with asthma, like so many of my peers.
