New Statistics Canada census data showed French language use in decline across the country — including in Ottawa.

The percentage of Canadians who spoke mostly French at home went from 22.2 per cent in 2016 down to 21.4 per cent in 2021, “continuing the downward trend seen in recent decades,” according to Statistics Canada.

In 2016, there were 85,910 people who spoke mainly French at home in the city. In 2021, 82,795 people said they spoke mostly French at home, even as Ottawa’s population grew.Article content “Each survey finds that French is in decline,” he said. “We’re not the city where French is in decline the most in Ontario, from what I understand … But it remains concerning for the francophone community.”
