The "Empty Chairs / Broken Heart" display outside the Jewish Community Center on Edgewood Avenue represents a dinner table set for the Israeli hostages taken captive by Hamas terrorists. But on the first Shabbat of November 2023, tables were set in brilliant sunshine at the Jewish Community Center in Rochester — but the chairs were empty.
"It's not just that civilians were kidnapped — it's how they were kidnapped," added Sharon Shafrir, a volunteer for the event. "We have parents who have lost their children — they were practically massacred and then taken hostage. These are Holocaust survivors in that group — as I said, babies, children — 32 kids under the age of 18, and we are extremely worried."
