'It’s all art, you know?'
In the video for the first single from Lorely Rodriguez’s upcoming EP—the slinky, seductive, impossibly catchy “Save Me”—the musician, better known as, slips a finger into the mouth of a Venus flytrap before brushing it gently across the lip of a pitcher plant. As far as metaphors for the song’s feral ode to carnality go—“If you need me, baby, take me in the back of the room for the night,” she sings—it couldn’t feel more apt.
One area in which Rodriguez needed no help, however, was finding inspiration for the EP. After the end of her most recent relationship, she decided to ship herself off to Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas, a sprawling, hacienda-like complex set in lush greenery minutes from the Rio Grande. “It’s insane—it’s truly one of the most magical places in the world,” Rodriguez says. There, she wrote 22 songs in two weeks, with some making their way onto theEP.
Another key facet of Rodriguez’s new chapter is her keen eye for fashion. She’s been working with the stylist Chris Horan—the mastermind behind the playful, renegade style of Barbie Ferreira, Rowan Blanchard, and Charli XCX—as well as bringing her own pool of references to the table. “We talked about just being really hot,” she says, laughing. “I want to embrace my body, all my curves and everything.
Indeed, with the opening of this new era in her decade-long career, Rodriguez has never felt more herself. “With this EP, the artwork, the videos, the clothing, everything, I just feel so in my body,” she says. “I’ve just arrived to a place where I’m a 32-year-old woman, and I love being confident in myself because I didn’t always feel that way.
