The Empire Strikes Back originally had a much bigger Wampa attack, and this cut scene became official Star Wars canon nearly four decades later.
A monster attack on Echo Base was cut from The Empire Strikes Back but was finally made canon after 37 years. The first draft of The Empire Strikes Back featured a Wampa invasion of Echo Base, a big step up from just one of the creatures attacking Luke Skywalker at the beginning of the film. Although the entire sequence was filmed, it was ultimately cut from the movie and was considered non-canon ever since.
