The Chicago home of the teenager whose brutal murder in 1955 sparked the US civil rights movement, is one of 33 sites deemed of importance which will receive renovation funding
The grant, distributed by the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund, will help restore the Till family’s Chicago home where Emmett lived with his mother Mamie Till Mobley. The red brick Victorian home, built over a century ago, was sold to a developer in 2019 after it had fallen into disrepair. It was later designated a city landmark by the city of Chicago. The money will go towards restoring the second floor to what it looked like when the Tills lived there.
Leggs said he felt it was important that the project highlight the historical contribution of Mamie Till Mobley.
