Cleveland's closer is locked in for the next five years!
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Closer Emmanuel Clase and the Guardians have reached agreement on a five-year, $20 million extension. The deal is contingent on him passing his physical.
The deal breaks down this way: $2 million signing bonus, $1.5 million in 2022, $1.5 million in 2023, $2.5 million in 2024, $4.5 million in 2025 and $6 million in 2026. The first club option year includes a $2 million buyout. The second club option includes a $1 million buyout, but Clase cannot receive both buyouts.
If Clase pitches or makes 200 appearances between 2022-2026 the base salary on his club options will increase by $500,000. The next step is 250 innings or appearances, which would increase the options by $1 million. The next step would be 300 innings or appearances, which would increase the options to $2 million.The Guardians have purchased Clase’s four arbitration years. If they exercise the club options in 2027 and 2028, they were be of his free agent years.
