Emily writer and director Frances O'Connor talks about exploring the life of prolific WutheringHeights author Emily Brontë, working with SexEducation's Emma Mackey, and making the leap from actress to filmmaker:

In her directorial debut, Frances O'Connor brings to life the prolific author Emily Brontë in a way that she's never been seen before. Emily stars Sex Education actress Emma Mackey in the title role, and she is joined by Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Fionn Whitehead, Alexandra Dowling, and Amelia Gething.

For me, it's also who she represents. She was very interesting, as an introvert. I feel it's good to celebrate the introvert. And she was someone who suffered from social anxiety, which I kind of relate to. She also had this crazy, big, beautiful imagination, and I wanted to celebrate that as well. Frances O'Connor: Oh, great. Yeah, the mask was a real object that the Brontës had. We don't know what it looked like, but it was given to Patrick [Brontë] and his wife on their wedding night. They never found out who it came from. And he did make the children put it on and speak through it, so I just thought it was a great artifact or symbol for Emily's creativity; her connection to her mother, the feminine.

But it was interesting, because when we got to composing, we'd had a temp score on it. And then Abel Korzeniowski came along, and he really took that and solidified that. When you actually started to see the film as a whole come together, it was more emotional than I thought. You never really know that until you you see it put together; there's always that one aspect. It's like the film is telling you almost, "Actually, I'm this.

Emma Mackey is wonderfully talented, and I'm sure that made it a little bit easier. She's still on the rise with Sex Education and Barbie, but was there any guidance or transference there between you two as far as how you crafted the character of Emily and the experience that you bring as an actress [while] also being a director?
