Drivers in Oak Bay are faced with a new detour on Sunday morning as Emerson the elephant seal crosses the road.
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans is en route to help move him back to the becah, and police say there are efforts underway to move him back so there isn’t a crash.Beach Drive between Windsor and Currie Rd is being closed temporarily as Emerson the seal has been crossing Beach Drive. Efforts are underway to move him back down the beach to avoid an accident. DFO is enroute. Update will be provided once Beach Dr is re-opened.
A week later, Emerson had made the long journey back and once again found himself on a beach in the Gorge.DFO hoped to leave him alone so he could complete his moulting, which is a stressful but natural process for the animals, however concerns quickly surfaced for his wellbeing.
